I flew out of JFK in July of 2006. I drove from Fairfield Co,CT and it took me a little over an hour and a half from my apartment to the terminal door. The drive was approx an hour and the ride on the Airtrain took 30 minutes.
The long term parking exit is easy enough, right off the Van Wyck expressway and the signs point you in the right direction to park. The lot was pretty full at 6pm on a Thursday, but there were open spots. I was a short walk from the airtrain station, is easy to do and all the trains from the parking train station stop at all of the termminals.
There are two stations, Howard Beech and Federal Circle, which both access the long term lots, and Federal circle saves you a couple minutes on the train.
Its a little pricy compared to other airports, especially based on how far away you are from the terminals, but It is New York and thats to be expected.
Pros: Free transportion via the Airtrain to the terminal. There were airport employees with radios on the platform and the train for security and supervision, which is nice if you are flying out late at night or early in the morning. Cons: Long Train Rides to the Termainals, all trains go the same direction around the loop, so its a quick ride to terminal 1, but a real long ride to termainal 8/9.

I was going on a weekend business trip. I was a little nervous about leaving my brand new car somewhere like an airport. It worked out fine. I found a nice spot, parked, and took the air tram or whatever it's called to the airport.
The only problem was returning. The tram malfunctioned and skipped my stop. I had to wait for a long time to get to the lot.
Overall, I would use it again. Pros: *Convenient
*Large enough lot to not have to park your car on top of another. Buses/free shuttles bring passengers to the tram. Cons: *Expensive, if staying for more than a few days.
*Airtram has problems that need to be resolved.

I driove up to the facility this past weekend and saw numerous and vast parking facilities, and a shuttle bus was driving around looking for pick ups to the train. One security officer told me though very rarely it gets full, and thereis security, so I will be parking there over the Thanksgiving holiday. It look well organized and nicely kept.

I just spoke to someone at this lot and he was quite professional and courteous. I will be parking there Thanksgiving weekend..the day before and he said by chance if the lot is full. they will direct you to the long term lot at the airport, but he said people come and go every minute..so the gate will let you in. Also I recommend you mark on your ticket the spot where you are at. I should not have a problem. My flight is 8:40am and I will allow myself lots of time to park, get to my terminal and have breakfast before my flight to LA.
