Des Moines International Airport (DSM), about three miles away from Des Moines, serves the capital of Iowa and surrounding areas. Offering nonstop service to destinations such as Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and Tampa Bay, DSM airport had nearly 2 million passengers pass through in 2010. Although Des Moines International Airport is served by several major airlines including AirTran Airways, Allegiant Air, Delta, US Airways, American Eagle, and Frontier, about a third of DSM airport flights are from United.
The airport is easy to access from nearby freeways. If you’re coming from the north, take I-35 southbound to I-235 West and exit Martin Luther King Parkway to Fleur Drive. From the south, follow I-35 northbound to Iowa Highway 5. If traveling from east or west, take I-80 to either Iowa Highway 5 or I-235 East, respectively. Additionally, DSM airport has buses available for Polk County through the Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART) and the Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA).
Recently, the DSM terminals were given a makeover with renovations in several concourses and the airport building itself. As it currently stands, the airport terminal is divided into two concourses. Concourse A deals with flights from Allegiant Air, AirTran, Frontier, United and its affiliate United Express, while Concourse C is utilized by American Eagle, Delta, and US Airways.
